What is the One Stroke Dragon?

As the name suggests, this dragon is drawn with a single brush stroke, without any breaks, while making a wish or praying. It is said that this dragon will bring “uninterrupted development and financial luck”, “uninterrupted good fortune and growth that connects people”, and “continued protection and safety”. For around 400 years, from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the present day, the dragon god has been worshipped and treasured as a deity that brings blessings and good fortune, and people have continued to pray to it and pass on its legend.

Kyoto One Stroke Dragon Painter / Keisuke Teshima

Keisuke Teshima has been fascinated by dragons since he was a child, and has continued to paint them ever since. He was also influenced by the Japanese martial art of karate, which he practiced for 14 years from the age of 6, and when he came across the traditional One Stroke Dragon style, he was deeply impressed by the history and origins of the technique, and felt that it was his destiny to learn it, so he taught himself. While preserving the tradition of One Stroke Dragon, which has continued since the Edo period, he pursues the dragon with the spirit of [Shuhari]. He is one of only three One Stroke Dragon painters in Japan. Although he is from Fukuoka Prefecture, various coincidences and good fortune have led him to set up his atelier in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, the 1,000-year-old capital where the dragon god resides

The city of Kyoto, where the dragon god resides

For over 1,000 years, Kyoto has been considered a place where the power of the dragon god, who resides in dragon holes and dragon veins, is present. There are many shrines and temples associated with dragons, and since ancient times, there has been a lot of activity in terms of visiting these places to pray to the dragon god.

The Dragon (Dragon God Belief) in Japan

Japan has long been considered a mysterious country where dragons dwell, and dragons have been thought of as messengers of the gods or even as gods themselves. In many shrines, temples, myths and legends, dragons are worshipped and revered as dragon gods, and they are considered symbols of prosperity and protection.
